Aromatherapy: Getting Started With Essential Oils

What is aromatherapy? 

Aromatherapy uses plant extracts called essential oils that are responsible for the scents they release. Stored in tiny glands localized in different parts of the aromatic plant (leaf, flower, fruit, seed, bark), they are obtained by distillation with water vapor, extraction or pressurization.

Some essential oils have a sedative and regulating effect on the central nervous system and can, therefore, be used to treat sleep disorders, without inducing addiction.

Although the undesirable effects of aromatherapy remain rare, it is important to strictly adhere to the administration route, the precautions for use and not to use it in certain populations at risk.

How to use essential oils:

In order to avoid overdose, the dosage must be strictly observed without exceeding the indicated doses:

Orally:

6 to 12 drops maximum per day;

This can be done with sugar or in honey to offset bitterness.

Dermal:

6 to 10 drops maximum per day;

If you are using essential oils in a massage or directly on the skin, you can dilute essential oil in vegetable oil, vegetable oil, or olive oil. Massage gently into the skin. 

In baths (duration = 15 minutes): since essential oils are not soluble in water, they must always be diluted in a neutral vegetable oil or a foaming gel.

By air, also known as a diffuser:

In diffusion (session of 20 minutes): a few drops of essential oil in an electric diffuser; =

Aromatherapy and precautions for use-

Always wash your hands with soap and water after using an essential oil;

In case of heating essential oils by an electric diffuser, caution is particularly recommended in rooms frequented by children, pregnant or breastfeeding women or people with allergies ;

In case of accidental contact with the eyes: rinse thoroughly with water and clean the eye with a cotton swab moistened with vegetable oil. In case of persistent pain or vision problems, consult an ophthalmologist as soon as possible;

In case of accidental ingestion: do not induce vomiting but ingest 3-4 tablespoons (60ml) of vegetable oil. Contact the poison control center or take medical attention.

Some essential oils have a photosensitizing effect or are irritating to the skin and must be diluted in a vegetable oil (sweet almond for example) before application;

Keep the bottles of essential oil under lock, out of reach of children.

Dangers of Aromatherapy 

When to avoid Essential oils:

For the children under the age of 3 years without medical advice;

In children under 7 years oral. After this age, the doses must be adapted (halving);

In children under 12 years of age inhaled;

In the presence of children from 3 to 10 years when the essential oil is used by diffusion in a room;

In pregnant women, especially during the first trimester of pregnancy, a medical opinion proving necessary for the last two quarters;

In breastfeeding women;

in persons with a history of seizures or seizure disorders (especially for ketone-rich essential oils such as camphor rosemary);

In elderly subjects (medical advice advised);

In polyallergic subjects for whom a preliminary skin test is recommended by applying 1 or 2 drops of essential oils to the hollow of the elbow (local reaction after 48 hours).
